Kate’s Story: Sometimes a Perfect Diet isn’t Enough

By: 0

In this video, I sit down with Kate to talk about her health journey. Kate was actually my very first one-on-one nutrition coaching client, and we started working together a few years ago. When Kate and I first worked together she definitely made some progress by changing her nutrition, but there were some lingering issues that still weren't fixed. I suspected that these underlying issues were present when we started working together, but at the time we weren't able to investigate them any further. When I got my Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® certification about a year ago, Kate was the first to hop on board. The FDN program is perfect for someone like Kate whose diet, exercise, and sleep were on point, but she still felt like something wasn't right. With FDN we investigate underlying hidden causes of health issues like hormone balance, nutrient deficiencies, digestive issues, blood sugar imbalances, etc. Sometimes even a perfect diet isn't enough to fix these things and that's where FDN comes in. In Kate's case, there was an underlying digestive imbalance that was leading to a number of her main complaints. After trying everything else here's what happened when Kate did the protocol to restore digestive balance: -She lost 18lbs -Her digestion was the best it's ever been in her life -Her sleep was dramatically better -No energy crash at 2-3pm -She didn't need to take a nap in the middle of the day for the first time in 2 years Kate we're so proud of you and all your success! Keep up the great work! Interested in getting to the root cause of your health issues? What causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

By: 0

A lot of people have IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but most people don't realize that there is some underlying cause that is leading to those symptoms of IBS. The #1 cause of IBS is something called SIBO, which stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. SIBO occurs when too much bacteria, which should normally stay in the large intestine, starts to inhabit the small intestine, which shouldn't have quite as much bacteria. This can happen for any one of a number of reasons including excess sugar consumption, antibiotic overuse, slow motility (constipation), etc. Unfortunately, SIBO is rarely tested for in the conventional medical world, and as a result most people have to take a supplement or prescription for the rest of their life to deal with the symptoms of SIBO. In this first video, we talk about what SIBO is and how to find out if you have it. In the second video we'll talk about ways you can work with a qualified health practitioner to recover from SIBO. As always guys, but especially with this video, nothing said in the video should be taken as medical advice or as a substitute for medical advice. It's not meant to diagnose, treat, prescribe, or cure. Always talk with your doctor or other qualified medical practitioner before pursuing any new health protocol.

Should you try an elimination diet?

By: 0

Wellness Wednesday is officially back for 2017!! We took a little hiatus there for the holidays to highlight the Whole90 challenge and some of our great success stories from 2016. But we're officially back, and we've got a whole bunch of fresh new content for you. We've got new science videos, new Amy's Treat Corner videos, new cooking demos, new testimonials, and a very special Paleo restaurant feature coming up soon! Also, in an effort to make the videos more manageable to watch I'll be making most of the science videos going forward a decent amount shorter. I still have a couple long ones in the cue (like today's) that will be showing up. So, going forward I'll be making the science videos in particular shorter for you guys so they're more accessible for everyone. With all that being said let's get to the new video for the week on elimination diets! Elimination diets are all the rage these days whether it's a gluten-free diet, a FODMAP-free diet, nightshade-free diet, 21 day sugar detox, etc. There are many different types of elimination diets, but what they all have in common is eliminating some food group or groups from your diet for a period of time. In this video we explain what an elimination diet is and how certain types of elimination diets can be helpful for you depending on your health goals. There are certain types of elimination diets that we think can be very beneficial, like a Whole30, and there are others that can be useful but may be more trouble than they're worth. One of the main points made in the video though is that most elimination diets are merely symptom control for a particular health issue and aren't always getting to the root cause of the issue. It's always important to look for that deeper root cause of a health issue that may be causing you to feel better on an elimination diet. Otherwise you might be stuck doing an elimination diet for the rest of your life, which is no fun and is missing the point because most of these elimination diets are only meant to be done for a short period of time before getting back to a slightly more relaxed form of eating.

Megan’s Story-Healthy for Life

By: 0

Megan's Story-Healthy for Life In this week's video I sit down with Megan who did our 2016 Whole90 last January. Megan was already eating fairly healthy to begin with when she started the Whole90, but even with that she noticed some definite improvements in her overall health by doing the Whole90. -She noticed quite a bit more energy, less fatigue -Better mental clarity -Felt better about what she ate -By creating a healthy relationship with food she didn't have as much guilt surrounding food and eating. Even more importantly, here we are, exactly a year later and she's kept up these excellent nutrition habits, which is the real goal. Anyone can do a 30 day detox or a cleanse. However, it's much more impressive and significant to keep up those habits for a year and eventually for life. Megan, you did a fantastic job with the Whole90, and we're all so proud of you! :) For those of you on the fence about the 2017 Whole90, there are only 4 days left to sign up! It's over 50% off our normal one-on-one nutrition coaching prices and we won't be doing it again until January 2018. Click here for details.

Check out Courtney's testimonial about her experience with the 2016 Whole90 In this testimonial video Courtney talks about her experience with our 90 day nutrition coaching program. Courtney managed to  do great with the Whole90 while running her own business with her partner, searching for a new home with her husband, and working with an extremely small kitchen. In addition to her nutrition she focused on her stress, and that helped her see more success. Her training improved. Her mental clarity improved in the morning and while doing her work throughout the day. One of my favorite quotes from Courtney from the interview was “You don’t realize how bad you feel until you start to feel good.” That’s really one of the most amazing realizations from doing a nutrition challenge. Congrats on all your success Courtney! We wish you all the best in the future.

Nikki’s Story-Eating Healthy while Flying Most Weeks for Work

By: 0

Our 2017 Whole90 stars in a little over two weeks. So, we wanted to revisit one of our great Whole90 success stories from the past year to show you how you can achieve your health and weight loss goals in 2017 even if you travel every week for work like Nikki. In this video Nikki tells us about her journey of losing 23lbs, 1.5 inches off her waist, and 3 inches off her hips. Nikki’s situation was unique for a couple of reasons. First, in addition to having a family to take care of, Nikki basically has to fly most weeks for work, which initially seems like it would make good food choices much harder. However, Nikki explains in the video how she just had to make a few not-so-hard changes to her way of doing things like going to Whole Foods rather than a fast food place when she’s in another town. Second, Nikki lost a little weight during month 1 when we gradually transitioned her to real food. But she really did amazingly well in month 2 when we did the Whole30, and at that point she lost 20lbs in the space of a month. Sometimes the Whole30 is really the catalyst that makes the difference for people in terms of weight loss. Nikki, you did an awesome job with everything, and we’re all so proud of you! Keep up the great work! If you're interested in getting all the details for the Whole90, including links to sign up, click here: http://crossfitsouthbend.com/2017-cfsb-90-day-nutrition-challenge/

The 2017 Whole90 Nutrition Challenge-Angie’s Story

By: 0

“Eat less, workout more.” We hear it all the time. It’s the simple key to weight loss and health. Or is it? Angie had been told multiple times by her doctor and others to eat less and workout more, and she ended up GAINING 12lbs over the course of a year weight with that approach. When she came to see us we suggested she eat MORE real whole food not less. Over the course of three months of eating more food, but quality real whole food, she lost 13lbs, 2.5 inches off her waist, and 2.25 inches off her hips. Even more importantly, her hair and nails started growing again, her cravings for bad food are gone, and her digestion is a lot better. There are so many people out there who are told “just eat less, and workout more”. But that’s not always the right answer, and the truth is a lot more nuanced than that. We actually find that most people achieve their health and weight loss goals faster by eating MORE real whole food, and exercising LESS but more intelligently with high intensity interval training and strength work. Want to experience your own transformation by eating real whole food? Our 2017 Whole90 starts January 15th 2017, and you can get a discount on it if you sign up before Christmas. You can get all the details about the challenge, and you can sign up for the challenge, here: http://crossfitsouthbend.com/2017-cfsb-90-day-nutrition-challenge/ Our 2017 Whole90 Nutrition Challenge is over 50% off our normal one-on-one nutrition coaching prices, and it won’t happen again until 2018. The 2017 CFSB 90-Day Nutrition Challenge!

By: 0

What is the CFSB Whole90 Nutrition Challenge?
  • It’s CrossFit South Bend’s yearly gym nutrition program where we challenge you to eat real whole food for 90 days. We only do this ONCE a year and it’s over 50% off our normal one-on-one nutrition coaching prices.
Why should I do the CFSB Whole90 Nutrition Challenge?
Have you ever thought to yourself "I know what I should be eating, but I just can't bring myself to do it?" We can help. We can make it so that this year you finally achieve your health, fitness, and weight goals by eating healthy. How?
  • Guidance: We'll teach you exactly what you need to eat to be healthy
  • Support: No one has infinite willpower. We'll keep you on track even when there's temptation.
  • Accountability: We'll hold you accountable to your goals with weekly food journals.
How much weight can I expect to lose if my goal is weight loss?
  • We think a healthy, sustainable amount of weight to lose is 8-12lbs a month, so you could lose up to 24-36lbs over the entire course of the Whole90 (assuming that you have that much weight to lose). Remember, the goal is not to lose as much weight as possible. It’s 1) to be healthy and 2) keep the weight off long-term.
What if I don't have any weight to lose and I want to build size and strength instead?
  • We have a specific program called the Swole90 that teaches you how to gain healthy size and muscle with a foundation of real whole food instead of a bunch of junk food that will make you fat, sick, and tired.
Why 90 days?
  • We want you to make healthy eating a life-long habit, and science has pretty conclusively shown that it takes 67 days (at a minimum) to establish a new habit. This is not meant to be a fad diet, detox, cleanse, etc.
Can I just sign up for one-month of the challenge?
  • No, mainly for the reasons stated directly above. We want to you to make healthy eating a habit and it requires more than 30 days to do that.
When will the challenge take place?
  • Sunday January 15th 2017 to Saturday April 15th 2017
Can friends and family who are not CrossFit South Bend members participate in the 90-day nutrition challenge?
  • Yes! You can send this webpage directly to your friends and family. This page includes a link, located just below, for people who are not CrossFit South Bend members to sign up.
Can I purchase the Whole90 Nutrition challenge for a friend or family member as a gift for the holidays?
