Amy R: The longest 30 days

By: 0

I started the Whole30 program in May 2015.  I had several reasons for wanting to give the Whole30 program a try.   I was diagnosed in 2013, with hypothyroidism.  I  was feeling tired, had gained weight and lacking energy.   I was looking for answers to whether it was my thyroid or my diet.    I decided to tell everyone I knew that I was doing this program, so I would be held accountable.   I was surprised how many of my friends wanted to try Whole30 after I had completed it. Robby was very supportive during the process.  He could tell when I was struggling and encourage me to continue. He would ask that I send him a weekly food journal and would respond back quickly with suggestions and ideas.  I couldn't have done it without him. I won't lie...it was difficult at times, and it felt at times like the longest 30 days of my life!! :)   Looking back, it was so worth it! I got so many answers after completing Whole30 and slowly introducing foods back into my diet. My body did not like my old foods and it was the first time I really listened to what my body was telling me.  My weight gain and lack of energy were not due to my thyroid....it was the food I was eating!    I have drastically cut down on my sugar and gluten.   I do reward myself at times with desserts, but I now eat Whole30 most of the time.   After more than 3 years, I am down to my goal weight and maintaining.   My energy level has never been higher! I am so glad that I decided to do Whole30 and can't thank Robby enough for all his support!!

31 Heroes – Saturday August 8th

On August 6, 2011, a tragedy shook the military community and Americans everywhere. In a single instance, America lost 30 military service members, many of whom were members of the Navy SEAL community—and one military K9– when an Extortion 17 helicopter was downed in Afghanistan. In the wake of the unimaginable tragedy, a mission was born. Following the downing of Extortion 17, a fundraising WOD—hosted at more than 430 gyms around the country with more than 10,000 participants—raised $300,000 over a four-week period to support the 30 families affected. This prompted the organizers to create The 31Heroes Project to remember our fallen heroes and take care of their loved ones. Humbled by the massive response and inspired by the impact on the families of these heroes, 31Heroes recognized an opportunity to reach even more families. Soon, new events and WODs were organized with the help of a growing network of passionate volunteers. Today, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, 31 Heroes assists athletes and event organizers around the country with tools and resources to continue the legacy of selflessness and comradery of August 6, 2011. Through strategic alliances with other organizations they can ensure that all proceeds directly fund programs that support service members and their families, including the Navy SEAL community. Since the first event in 2011, more than $1.5 million has been given back to our nation’s heroes and their families through grant-making opportunities and partnership programs. In 2015, The 31Heroes Project launched the initiative to send a designated number of veterans to distinguished brain centers across the country to receive cutting-edge treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or Traumatic Brain Injury. They’ve left behind more than just memories. They’ve given us a legacy to honor. Together, we can ensure the mission to honor the fallen lives on and veterans are not forgotten when they return home.[/accordion_item][accordion_item title="When will CFSB be hosting 31 Heroes?"]When will CFSB be hosting 31 Heroes? Doug B: Thrusters and Mayonnaise

By: 0

[vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][text_output]Before I joined CFSB I had been lifting weights pretty regularly for about two years prior and was completely stuck in a rut. I was just so tired of the globo-gym routine where I would constantly witness curved backs on deadlifts, squats that didn’t come close to full depth, bros flexing in the mirrors, and the god-awful Smith machine (who is Smith and why did he create that awful thing?). After hearing Chad talk about how awesome Crossfit South Bend was I decided I’d give it a try. Living the globo-gym life for a couple years, you get used to seeing a sea of weight machines, dumbbells, and treadmills so I was surprised by how empty CFSB felt when I initially walked in. To the uninitiated, it looks like someone set up a few squat racks, what could be mistaken for scaffolding, dangled some rings from the ceiling, and called it a gym so I wasn’t sure how it was all going to work. After my first on-ramp WOD all of that skepticism disappeared. I remember thinking two things; don’t puke, and sign-up for a membership as soon as possible. That first WOD has led to many accomplishments and moments of pride in the past year, the first being committing myself to something that makes your brain scream at you to stop while you force yourself to run a little faster, swing the kettlebell again, or push the bar overhead. The accomplishment of which I am most proud was RXing 15.5 and completing less than twenty minutes, and then setting a new PR for Helen the next day. Up until that point in the open I hadn’t RX’d a single workout and when I saw 15.5 involved thrusters I immediately thought, “whelp, looks like I won’t be RXing another one”. Because, you see, I hate thrusters at any weight. I hate thrusters more than anything on this planet (even more than mayonnaise) and for me to force myself to grind through at the Rx weight was big and then to go into Helen the next day, not trying to get a PR and actually coming up with one just added to a memorable couple of days. (Side note: I didn’t walk right for a week after that). As for my current goals, I’m trying to get my first muscle-up and trying to regain the ability to string double-unders together. I say regain because I had them at one point but then they vanished (apparently practice is necessary). I’ll let you know how it goes.
